Founded on 25 August 1975 by the Miguelunda Educational Corporation of the Limaco sisters of Binan, who are known for their integrity and business acumen, the College opened its doors to about 115 students enrolled in Commerce, Secretarial and General Clerical programs in June 1976. Housed in a three-storey building, half of what is now called SL Hall located in Platero, Binan, Laguna, the College was then called Binan College. A concept of Dr. Luisa Limaco-De Leon, the College was brought to life with Pura Limaco providing the logistics and Milagros Limaco, a seasoned educator acting as the Chairperson of the Board and the Director of the School.
In the years that followed, additional programs were offered, viz, Graduate in Midwifery, B.S. in Nursing and Bachelor of Arts, Associate in Tourism, Preparatory Dentistry, Bachelor in Elementary Education and Bachelor of Secondary Education. High School opened with 75 students in 1978 and was housed in a one-storey five-room building called RL Hall. The Grade School opened with 29 pupils in 1981. The steady increase in enrolment brought construction of a second three-storey building, the ML Hall in 1988. It was at this time when the College was renamed Saint Michael's College of Laguna, a marketing move made to appeal to more popular tastes. Enrolment in he high school level improved when older more popular private high schools closed. SMCL became the top choice of transferees from these schools. The one-storey building that house high school was demolished and a three- storey building, the PL Hall was built in its place.
Subscribing to the flagship concept of Dr. Antonio Dumlao then Director of Bureau of Higher Education, the College opted to focus its energy in strengthening its few program offerings. It was only during the first half of the 1990's when other programs were offered viz, BS in Accountancy, Associate in Computer Secretarial, Hospitality Management and Associate and BS in Computer Science. The Graduate School was likewise opened offering MA in Educational Management and Master in Business Administration programs.
When Milagros Limaco retired in 1997 for health reasons, Rosa Limaco-Cruz took over as President while Dr. Lourdes Almeda-Sese took over the reins as Executive Vice-President. It was during this time that the College took a dramatic transformation not only in the campus physical structures but also in the service delivery.
The Learning Resource Center, a three-storey building housing the library, was constructed at the heart of the campus. The covered court was converted into a multipurpose air conditioned hall, the Saint Theodore Hall. Additional majors were added in Business Administration Management and Information Services Management. The College got connected to the Internet through the Quantum Web. A revised curriculum was implemented in the School of Nursing and Midwifery – AHSE leading to Midwifery and AHSE leading to BS Nursing. Enrolment was at its peak in 1998-1999 when it rose to at least 4,320.
Expansion continued with the construction in 2003 of the Saint Louise Early Childhood Center (SLECC), a two-room building, complete with air conditioned classrooms for pre-school and a faculty room and St. Mary's Conference Center, a three-storey mock hotel. In 2004, the School of Hospitality Management and Allied Courses was created. From 1978 through 2005 a batch of 28 batches or a total of 17,401 graduated from the different schools of the College.
On the occasion of Saint Michael's College of Laguna's 30th year, its pearl anniversary, the SMCL's 30 Model and Promising Michaeleans Awards will be handed to the School's alumni who have exceptionally exemplified the SMCL's ideal of service moral uprightness, commitment to excellence and love for humanity. In their quest for the good life, they have contributed in more ways than one in propelling and promoting the School's good name to greater heights.
The 30 Model and Promising Michaeleans were determined with a Nomination Committee composed of three members appointed by the Search Committee. Nominations were submitted in two packets consisting of a completed nomination form and a nomination letter showing how the nominee meets the awards criteria. A total of 255 nominations were submitted to the Search Committee. The nominees were evaluated based on the criteria set that included personal qualities and character, professional competence and technical/entrepreneurial skills and community involvement. The Search Committee conducted the initial screening through documentary analysis and interviews. A total of 80 nominees made it to the finals broken in batches of 40, 20 and 20. The 30 Model and Promising Michaeleans had nothing when they came but a raw passion and potential to succeed. Their Michaelean education nurtured their potential, nourished their passion and spirit, and unfolded their person to the fullest to prepare them for life. The hurdles that they faced did not deter them from pursuing their dreams. These even strengthened their resolve to go on, surmount the odds, overcome and eventually realize their dreams.
They used their Michaelean education to improve their personal circumstances not only for themselves but for others in their families and communities. Then they succeeded bringing forth to the world the Michaelean ideal of service, moral uprightness, commitment to excellence and love for humanity. Theirs are simple lives lived in extraordinary ways. Theirs are humble achievements, but the difference they have made to the lives of the people that they touched within their sphere of influence speaks of something immeasurable. They embody the ideal that excellence is not a product of birth or wealth but of perseverance, dedication and hardwork. - R. Tenido
