SMCL joins Zonta's breast care campaign
There is power in information. Early detection means prevention.
Guided by this belief, Zonta International (ZI) District 17 initiated the Breast Cancer Prevention through Breast Self-Awareness Sticker Campaign to educate women on proper breast-self examination thus promoting the prevention of breast cancer.
ZI District 17 led by its District Governor, Ma. Victoria Potenciano-Vergel de Dios, partnered with I Can Serve Foundation, one of the most dynamic patient support networking groups actively promoting awareness and directions to alleviate the rising incidence of breast cancer among Filipino women. I Can Serve is represented by its founding president Kara Magsanoc- Alikpala.
They had the signing of Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on 14 October 2006 at The Loft, Rockwell, Makati City. ZI District 17 will involve the Z and Golden Z members to ensure the adequacy of gains and I Can Serve will serve as consultant for the content of the campaign. Serving as witnesses to the MOA signing were Primitiva “Baby” Perez Sison, Chairperson, Status of Women Service and Lourdes Almeda-Sese, Coordinator, Service Sub-Committee for Zonta D17, Lanie Eusebio and Coelina R. Vergel de Dios for I Can Serve Foundation. The campaign will run from 14 October 2006 to 30 September 2007.
A total of 70 Zontians from ten clubs in Area 1 and nine clubs in Area 5 attended the launching. Also present were ZID Imelda “Dandy” Gomez, Dr. Marilyn C. Alentajan, Area 1 Director, Teresita Castro, Vice Area 1 Director, Rosita Celis, Vice Area 5 Director, and Concepcion Basilio, Past Area 1 Director, and District Committee Chairs.
Provincial launch at SMCL
True to her words to start at her hometown, Dr. Lourdes Almeda-Sese, Coordinator, District Service Sub-Committee, spearheaded the Breast Care Information and Cancer Awareness Forum and Sticker “Dikit” Day at St. Theodore Hall, Saint Michael’s College of Laguna, Biñan, Laguna on 13 January 2007 with the full support of her home club, the Zonta Club of Laguna, and Z and Golden Z Clubs of Saint Michael’s College of Laguna. This was to show the other Zonta clubs how to go about the forum and the sticker “dikit” campaign.
Dr. Nieva Almeda-Olivares, President of Biñan Doctors Hospital, discussed breast selfexamination (BSE) and the symptoms of breast cancer. On the other hand, Dr. Cresencia Gacoba, Obstetrician-Gynecologist, lectured on its diagnosis and treatment.
The panel shared their face-to-face encounter with the disease. The panelists were Ma. Victoria P. Vergel de Dios, Zonta International District 17 Governor, Enriquieta V. Doble, President of Zonta Club of Metro Ortigas, and Carla Paras-Sison, Info and Media Coordinator of I Can Serve Foundation and breast cancer survivor.
Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala, Founder-President of I Can Serve Foundation, and DG Virma Vergel de Dios led the signing of the pledge of commitment to support the Breast Cancer Awareness program.
Meanwhile, representatives from the barangay council (Terry Nielo), SMCL NSTP Unit (Arlene Emily Cuaresma), and youth (Charissa Mae Zaguirre, Golden Z Club president), expressed their support to the BSE sticker campaign.
ZI also launched their helpline, which is open for all questions on breast care. The hotline is (0921) 859-5971.
Advocates were presidents and members of different Zonta clubs in the Philippines led by Zonta Club of Laguna, Z Club of Laguna, Golden Z Club of Laguna, Society of Student Volunteers, students of NSTP, Barangay Officials of Platero and Soro-soro and 100 women volunteers from different towns in Laguna. ZID Ma. Imelda S. Gomez, STWS Chair Baby Perez Sison, Area 1 Director Marilyn C. Alentajan, Area 5 Director Mildred Piad, Vice Area 1 Director Teresita Castro, and Vice Area 5 Director Rosita Celis, together with their Club Presidents graced the forum.
To close the program, Dr. Divinia Lourdes R. Reyes reminded everyone to “Be aware, be informed, and keep abreast.”
